1. The idea of Straight Dope came from wanting to present an honest well rounded view of drugs in America.
2. I was inspired to write Straight Dope by reading many many books by Studs Terkel
3. I could not get one cop to talk with me about this book.
4. I sent out 30 query letters to various agents and almost all of them said no.
5. I thought about having the original cover inspired by the “DARE” logo.
6. I had to change certain names and facts to not incriminate people, seriously.
7. I had the idea of Straight Dope for ten years before I started writing it.
8. While on a plane, I spoke with a published author who suggested to me that I self publish Straight Dope. And here we are now….
9. When telling people about the project, one of the first things I am asked is, “Did you ever do drugs…?” And I have to tell them….
10. The original title for Straight Dope was something like, “Straight Dope: A look into America’s new favorite past time – drugs.
